Al-Jadida, "the Cité Portuguaise" in Morocco.
Al-Jadida, previously known as Mazagan, was seized by the Portuguese in 1502, later abandoned in 1769. This Portuguese Fortified City was registered as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2004, on the basis of its status as an "outstanding example of the interchange of influences between European and Moroccan cultures" and as an "early example of the realisation of the Renaissance ideals integrated with Portuguese construction technology" - a citadel built in the early 16th Century, very quiet, mainly local people getting on with their daily lives.
Overall, quiet, very peaceful and pleasant. Slightly over 100km from Casablanca, well worth the visit!
